It hosted the 20th UIA Congress in 1999 and witnessed the adoption of the UIA Beijing Charter, which had a significant influence on the Chinese architectural industry. After more than 20 years of development and marching into a new century, we wish in 2026, the architects from all over the world would meet once again in Beijing. Together we will provide a more open stage for the architectural industry, and at the same time we will show the great changes that the city has witnessed as a result of the development of new progressive concepts.
With great enthusiasm, Beijing hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 2008 and will welcome the Winter Olympic Games in 2022. As the centre of politics, culture, scientific and technological innovation, and international exchanges of China, every year Beijing hosts a number of international events, and its sound and advanced infrastructure will provide adequate support for hosting the UIA World Congress of Architects. A glistening array of architectural works through the past times and the interactions between the East and the West will also enable the concurrent World Capital of Architecture activities to present the most attractive side of Beijing.
Ancient yet modern, elegant and open, this city of more than 21 million people always surprises the world with its unique urban appearance. With remarkable profoundness and diversity, the city is developing at a fast pace, with a variety of opportunities and challenges brought by the new era. Many well-known architects from home and abroad, along with the local residents are working together in order to balance between the needs of the urban ecosystem, population control, health care, and heritage conservation by sharing their wisdom and with the help of technology.
We would like to propose “Architecture as an open stage” as the theme of the UIA 2026 Beijing World Congress of Architects. While the Beijing Charter can be regarded as an aspiration for architects from around the world at the dawn of a new millennium, the rapid advancement in human society over the past 20 years have brought human habitat to a level far beyond our imagination. The new height of achievement in technology urges architects to study how to adapt to the changes brought about by new technologies, and make more efforts to create a more beautiful and pleasant environment for mankind.
